Larnaca:
Larnaca is Cyprus’s third-largest city and an inviting coastal destination, known for its international airport, ancient heritage, sandy beaches, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. Located along the beautiful edge of Larnaca Bay, the city combines seaside charm with history, culture, shopping, dining, and easy access to the island’s eastern coastline.
The palm-lined seafront of Larnaca is a lively area filled with cafés, tavernas, shops, and bars, while the town’s historic fortress adds a traditional character to the waterfront. Today, the castle also serves as a cultural venue during the summer months, making it an important part of the city’s local life.
Larnaca is an excellent base for exploring central and eastern Cyprus. Its close distance to the island’s largest international airport, together with its selection of hotels, beach resorts, and holiday facilities, makes it a popular choice for both leisure and business travellers.
Although smaller than Nicosia and Limassol, Larnaca has preserved a calm and leisurely atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy the main shopping area around Zenon Kitieos Street, discover small local shops, and experience the colourful fruit and vegetable market nearby.
Historically, Larnaca was known as Kition, an ancient city-kingdom founded by the Mycenaean Greeks in the 13th century BC. It later became an important seaport and copper trade centre, with remains of its ancient walls and temples still visible at the archaeological site of Kition.
The city is also famous as the birthplace of the Stoic philosopher Zeno and as the second home of St Lazarus, who became the first Bishop of Larnaca. The impressive Church of St Lazarus, located in the heart of the town, remains one of the city’s most important religious and historical landmarks.
Larnaca’s main highlights include St Lazarus Church, the Zenobia diving wreck, Finikoudes Promenade, Larnaca Marina, Hala Sultan Tekke, Larnaca Salt Lake, Lefkara Village, the Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement, Ancient Kition, Angeloktistos Church, and the Pierides Museum.
